There has been a lot of discussion in the Media of late about Broadband Internet and whether we can afford the $43 Billion price tag the full roll out will cost. It seems to me that some politicians have lost the plot entirely. These naysayers must have been around when Australia was deciding on the rail gauges and came up with the Heinz 57 variates that we have in Australia today - and it is still costing us money and inefficiency over 100 years later.
What we have in Australia today under the so called "Free Market principals" given to us by the previous Liberal government is a joke. This statement is not an endorsement of one party (Labor/Liberal/Greens) over another, it is only about Optical fibre to the premises vs FTTN + wifi + adsl + HFC and whatever other legacy rubbish there is lying about. We cant predict the future but we already know that Business now requires more symmetrical service. It has already cost Australian Businesses Billions of dollars and while these losses are hard to quantify Billions would be an understatement.
As it is we have very uneven access some Business in the city are still only able to get dial-up or at best ADSL1 others are forced to use expensive roaming wireless connections for their fixed services just to attempt to get a half reasonable speed. While the early adopters of the wireless solution thought they had found their nirvana they soon came to realise that as more people in there area started using wireless the performance dropped dramatically and in some cases has become unusable.
Fibre is the only technology available to day that can give consistent band width to all users.
Fibre as in the NBN has the best chance of giving us the level playing field and giving some equalisation to the rural towns and outlying suburbs in Australia
Oh and if you think it is just the fringe dwellers who struggle with poor Internet service think again, there are suburbs within 12k of the Brisbane GPO that cannot get above ADSL1. Try running a business with 20 or 30 staff over that service.

The chief technology officer of Australian telco Telstra believes that a fixed-line network is the only way to deliver internet and telephone services. Hugh Bradlow says speeds of 100 megabits per second are required to deliver adequate capacity to consumers. Bradlow's comments relate to the Opposition's policy of using wireless technology rather than creating a national broadband structure.
Well how about that the CTO of Telstra thinks that wireless wont cut it, blow me down we will just have to use fibre; duh! and note the term adequate not fast or excessive, just adequate.
